Severn granted butterfly valve technology patent

The oblique cone technology (OCT®) has been developed for triple offset valves, and plays a critical role in the company’s reinvention of butterfly valves for control applications. The OCT triple offset is the first butterfly valve designed primarily for flow control, rather than isolation or shut-off.

The design is based on an ‘infinite circle’ geometry, and offers full bore capability, improving flow performance and Cv, as well as sealing capabilities. Severn claims that traditional triple offset butterfly valve designs have an elliptical disc seal and bolted sealing elements, which hinder flow performance and ultimately shorten the expected lifespan of the valve.

There are a number of customers already using the OCT triple offset control valve, including oil and gas, chemical and petrochemical, LNG and fertilizer manufacture organisations. According to the statement, the simplicity of its design delivers significant processing benefits and helps ensure low maintenance and longevity. Furthermore, it can be custom-engineered to non-standard specifications and its solid disc can incorporate anti-cavitation and low-noise trims when required.

Severn claims that the valve is also suitable for critical and severe service applications. It has passed fire safety and cryogenic testing, and can be used across a wide temperature range from -200°c to +800°c.

Achieving the patent is a major milestone. It underlines the uniqueness of the technology and gives added credibility to our status as a valve engineering business at the forefront of innovation.”
