HAM has released a statement claiming that, in collaboration with Port de Barcelona and GALP, it has developed the first gas station in the state port system.

The facility, which is capable of providing both LNG and CNG to trucks and vehicles, is located at the GALP service station on the Y Street in the Port of Barcelona. HAM has been responsible for construction and operation of the LNG station, while GALP has been responsible for improvements to the facility. The construction was financed by European funds through the CHAMeleon project, which is focused on developing the gas supply infrastructure for vehicular fuel in the Barcelona-Slovenia land corridor. The facility has two CNG pumps for trucks and vehicles, as well as two LNG pumps for trucks, and a cryogenic LNG tank with a capacity of 60 m3.

The facility was commissioned as part of the Port of Barcelona’s Air Quality Improvement Plan, which aims to reduce emissions from the port.

The President of the Port if Barcelona, Mercè Conesa, said: “This gas station is proof of the strong will of the Port of Barcelona to promote the use of an alternative, clean and sustainable fuel such as natural gas, which significantly reduces nitrogen oxide emissions and eliminates completely Fine particles and oxides of sulfur.”

According to the statement, approximately 2200 trucks transport goods to various locations in the area around the port. Currently, over 60 trucks are fuelled by natural gas, and either feature engines that work exclusively on gas, or on dual engines that run on diesel and gas. Of these, 26 trucks were transformed into the dual system thanks to the RePort project, led and coordinated by the Port of Barcelona with the support of ACCIÓ.

The Head of Marketing and Strategy of the HAM Group, Antoni Murugó Solé, said: “This gas station is added to the 21 stations operated by HAM and confirms our commitment to the environment and our firm commitment to LNG as a fuel for heavy transport.”

Conesa concluded: “This gas station is a key element to guarantee the supply of natural gas to the trucks operating in the Port area, to promote the use of this alternative fuel and, ultimately, to improve the quality of the air we breathe.”
