FortisBC provides grant for First Nations LNG worker training

FortisBC is currently expanding its Tilbury LNG facility in order to meet demand. Amongst those working on the project, approximately 3% are aboriginal and under-represented.
FortisBC, therefore, has given a CAN$75 000 grant to help aboriginal workers in British Columbia (B.C.) find work in the LNG sector. This grant will fund an eight-week long pre-apprenticeship training programme, which was developed by the non-profit organisation, Aboriginal Skills Group. This will allow members of the First Nations to broaden their employment prospects in the LNG industry, and follows the similar training programme developed by the Industry Training Authority (ITA).
Linden Pinay, the Executive Director of Aboriginal Skills Group, said: “There’s a lot of interest from within B.C. First Nations communities in accessing skilled trades training […] After completing this programme, students will be prepared to complete further skills training and apprenticeships, or move directly into entry level jobs.”
Doug Stout, the Vice President of market development and external relationships at FortisBC, added: “We believe it’s important for people to be able to work where they live […] This programme will help increase the number of local skilled individuals available to work on job sites and potentially take advantage of future opportunities in B.C.’s LNG industry.”
