ALE has announced that it has reached its first milestone in its work for the Yamal LNG project.

As part of the 16.5 million tpy Yamal LNG project, Yamgaz – the joint venture (JV) between Technip FMC, JGC and Chiyoda which is designing and building the plant – required an intermediate storage yard for modules and breakbulk equipment items, which are transshipped to Sabetta, Russia, during the winter period with specially designed polar class vessels.

ALE, which is contributing to the transshipment operations of the project’s modular intermediate storage yard (MISY) at the Port of Zeebrugge, Belgium, has now been working on the project for over a year. The company’s scope involves services for:

  • The load-in of modules shipped from Asian fabrication yards.
  • The jack-down and storage of the modules in a dedicated laydown yard.
  • The load-out of the modules for onward shipment to Sabetta, Russia.

ALE is also leading a JV with steel company Lemants and terminal operator ICO to manage the MISY contract. This JV has provided a range of services, including:

  • Project commercial management and administration.
  • Project documentation control.
  • QA/QC management.
  • HSE management.
  • Fabrication of new grillages and sea fastening.
  • Refurbishment of existing grillages for future re-use.
  • Deck cleaning of all the modular carrier vessels.
  • Project material transshipment (break-bulk cargo reception, tracking and tallying, storage on a dedicated yard and warehouse).
  • Yard facilities (warehouses, offices and canteen).
  • Port services (four dedicated berths, clearing for vessels entering, mooring, shifting and departing from the port).
  • Forwarding agent.
  • Security in all project areas, including International Ship and Port Facility (ISPS) compliancy.

Filippo Anello, ALE’s and the joint venture’s Project Director, said: “We have been working on this project since the very early preparation stages in 2015, and it is fantastic to see how much we have achieved at this milestone one year after. I’m extremely proud of the teamwork and professionalism shown during the execution of the project, as well as the good synergy and partnership with our client. We look forward to the successful completion of the logistics phase of the Yamal LNG project, which has demonstrated our ability to manage a project-specific joint venture and a wide-ranging scope of work.”

Toby Allin, ALE’s Global Project Division Director, added: “We were very honoured to lead the joint venture company that was selected to set up and manage the MISY facility for the Yamal LNG Project. This has given us the opportunity to work closely with our client in order to provide an integrated logistics solution that satisfies our client’s needs in terms of interface management and responsiveness. We believe that this is an innovative model for future, major projects to emulate.”
