ABS has released a statement claiming that it has granted Approval in Principle (AIP) for a floating LNG (FLNG) hull design by Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI). HHI claims that the design is capable of delivering a one-third cost reduction compared to a standard FLNG hull.
The vessel was specifically conceptualised for near-shore operations, and has a length of 1050 ft (320 m), a breadth of 197 ft (60) and a 39 ft (12 m) draft. It has an overall capacity of 200 000 m3 of LNG and utilises GTT MARK III technology.
Christopher J. Wiernicki, the President and CEO of ABS, said: “ABS has a history of helping the industry move forward by evaluating novel designs.
“Our joint development project with HHI is another example of the trust our clients place in ABS’ technical leadership.”
The Executive Vice President, Shipbuilding Division at HHI, Yun-Sik Lee, added: “In this depressed gas market, developing a price-competitive, near-shore FLNG hull with ABS could lead to providing the FLNG market with a novel approach to reduce the risks experienced in recent offshore EPC projects.”
