LNG-powered chemical tanker passes sea trials

Winterthur Gas & Diesel (WinGD) has announced that Terntank Rederi AS’s first 150 000 DWT chemical tanker has passed sea trials. The vessel, named Ternsund, features a dual-fuel two-stroke engine, utilising the low pressure X-DF gas admission technology developed by WinGD. The five-cylinder, 500 mm bore Wärtsilä RT-flex50DF engine will serve as the main engine driving the vessel’s propeller, and has a maximum power of 5850 kW at 102 rpm.
The vessel was undertaken by AVIC International Ship Development (China) Co. Ltd in Shanghai, China, and was completed by AVIC Dingheng Shipbuilding Co. Ltd in Jiangdu, China. It is expected to be delivered to Skagen-based (Denmark) Terntank by the end of June 2016. The vessel is the first of four ships ordered from AVIC Dingheng Shipbuilding by Terntank.
The Ternsund will largely operate in northern European waters, and will comply with SOx regulations in the sulfur emission control areas (SECAs). Furthermore, the engines ensure that the vessel complies with IMO Tier III NOx limits in gas operation without extra exhaust gas after-treatment.
The vessel is the result of the EU co-funded project, ‘Into the Future – Baltic SO2lution’. This project focuses on cooperation between Terntank, Wärtsilä, WinGD, North European Oil Trade (NEOT) and Wega Enviro, and promotes environmentally friendly and efficient shipping the Baltic Sea.
