Tallink has announced its new LNG fast ferry will be named Megastar – a name that was selected from a total of 21 550 proposals.

Production of the vessel began in August 2015 in the Meyer Turku Yard in Finland. The keel will be laid for the vessel on 9 February 2016 in the same yard, and the ferry will be delivered in 2017. Overall, the vessel has cost €230 million.

Janek Stalmeister, the Chairman of the Board of AS Tallink Grupp, said: “As Megastar will be among the largest of her kind in the world, this name expresses perfectly the characteristics of the ship. It is also easy to pronounce in Estonian, Finnish and other languages. As there were so numerous entries with that name, we also see it as the wish of many of our passengers.”

The vessel is 212 m long, 49 000 t, has a service speed of 27 knots, and is able to carry 2800 passengers at a time. It will operate on Tallinn-Helsinki route, and will comply with new emission control areas (ECAs), including the Baltic Sea. The hull form of the vessel allows the vessel to operate efficiently in ice conditions.
