ABS releases second edition of bunkering guidelines

LNG Industry,

In response to feedback received from the first edition, ABS has released a second edition of its guidelines on LNG bunkering in North America.

The second edition of the ‘Bunkering of Liquefied Natural Gas-Fueled Marine Vessels in North America’ provides guidance and clarification on areas of interest, based on initial industry feedback.

Significant enhancements to this update include:

  • A section on lessons learned from early adopters of LNG-fuelled vessels, including the first LNG bunkering and gas-fuelled vessel operation in North America.
  • A project guide, which provides a ‘road map’ of the regulatory, stakeholder and technical issues associated with developing an LNG bunkering project.
  • An updated port directory and survey, for which ABS contacted and visited ports in North America to collect details from stakeholders, port authorities, harbour safety committees, regulators (including the US Coast Guard) and other interested parties.

Commenting on the latest edition, Chuck Mitchell, VP Global LNG Services, ABS, said: “Interest in LNG bunkering in North America continues to grow even with the recent decrease in oil prices. Our intent is to provide working tools, templates and information that will help clients safely and efficiently advance their LNG bunkering projects.”
