Terberg to supply Turkish terminal with LNG tractors

LNG Industry,

Terberg Benschop, the Dutch-based truck and tractor manufacturer, is set to supply 40 LNG tractors to a new container terminal on the Marmra Sea in Turkey.

The trucks will be delivered to Asyaport, which will be the first transshipment container hub port in Turkey. Asyaport, which will have an annual capacity of approximately 2 million teu, said it ordered the LNG trucks for environmental, economic and geographical reasons. The LNG trucks will emit zero particulates and significantly reduce CO2 emissions. LNG is cheaper than diesel in Turkey and there is also an LNG filling station near Asyaport, making the investment logistically sound.

The Terberg YT222 tractor is equipped with a 170 MW Mercedes engine and can handle two trailers carrying 20 in. containers.

Asyaport is located in Barbaros/Tekirdag. It will be built by Asya Port Liman A.S, a joint venture between Global Terminal Ltd., part of the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) group, and the Turkish Soyuer family. Work began on the terminal in 2010 and is due for completion later this year.
