BV to class first containership LNG fuel conversion

Bureau Veritas (BV) has announced that it will class the conversion of Wessels Reederei’s MV WES AMELIE to LNG fuel. Once the 1036 teu containership has been converted in 2017, it will meet Tier III of MARPOL Annex 6 regulation. This will be the first containership conversion to LNG as fuel.
The vessel features a MAN 8 L 48/60B engine driving a controlled pitch propeller via gearing. MAN will convert the existing engine to a 51/60 DF dual-fuel engine. The LNG tank will have a capacity of approximately 500 m3, and will be located at the front of the vessel in order to limit the loss of cargo capacity.
The project is sponsored by the German Ministry of Transport and involves partners Wessels Reederei, MAN Diesel & Turbo, TGE Marine Gas Engineering, SMB Naval Architects & Consultants and BV.
The President of Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore Division, Philippe Donche-Gay, said: “Our experience with this kind of conversion on small scale LNG vessels helps the owners and other partners to move to confidently to this new and cleaner fuel.”

Tecnitas, which is BV’s consulting arm, is carrying out risk analyses for the new LNG fuel system and relevant operations, such as LNG bunkering.
