World’s first LNG Hybrid Barge contracted

LNG Industry,

Subsidiary of Becker Marine Systems GmbH & Co. KG, Hamburg-based Hybrid Port Energy GmbH, has contracted Slovakia’s Shipbuilding and Machinery of Komárno to build the world's first LNG Hybrid Barge.

In summer 2012 AIDA Cruises and Becker Marine Systems collaborated on a long-term cooperation project to provide low emission electrical power to cruise ships while at port. These represent the first marine classified LNG Caterpillar engines to be delivered to customers.

The barge will be fixed with five generator sets, which will be by Zeppelin Power Systems and will total 7.5 MW for 50/60 Hz operating on LNG.

The LNG Hybrid Barge is expected to be complete by summer of 2014. The barge will be 74 m long and stationed in the Port of Hamburg – due to be the first port in Europe capable of providing cold ironing power to cruise ships. Moreover, the barge and its engines will be able to supply combined heat and power to customers, which will improve ecological footprint.
