Hawiian Electric to choose LNG partner
Hawiian Electric Co. will chose from one of three bidders to deliver up to 800 000 tpa LNG to the utility’s generating stations from 2016 or 2017, as it seeks to replace oil with LNG in a bid to cut costs on electric bills and improve environmental quality.
Proposals for the 15-year supply of LNG came from around 10 companies, and Hawiian Electric expects to have selected the preferred supplier in June with agreements signed in August.
LNG will be delivered to the Hawaiian Electric’s generating stations via ISO containers. In conjunction with Hawaii Gas, the company is also looking at the supply of LNG either shipped in tankers to an onshore regasification terminal, or shipped to a floating regasification unit (FRU) from where it would be transported ashore.
