Hawaii Gas receives first LNG delivery

Hawaii Gas has received first delivery of liquefied natural gas (LNG) at its Honolulu Harbor as the company looks to support the supply of synthetic natural gas to Hawaiian customers. The LNG arrived from California in a 40 ft ISO tank with a capacity of 10 000 gal.

“Our goals are to serve the entire state and all industries; to minimize the impact on our harbours and our environment and ensure reliability at the lowest cost as a regulated utility,” said Joseph Boivin, the senior vice president for business development and corporate affairs at Hawaii Gas.

Boivin pointed out that the fuel-on-fuel cost savings of LNG suing LNG to produce electricity would be in the region of 30 - 50% compared to the usage of existing diesel and fuel oil.

In March, Hawaii Gas won approval from the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission (HPUC) to import LNG in three ISO containers. By 2018, the company aims to import LNG at a much increased rate of eight 40 ft ISO containers per day and to build a new regasification terminal at Pearl Harbor, or onshore/offshore Barbers Point. Hawaii Gas is preparing to submit this request to the PUC.

“In addition to backup the fuel supply project, Hawaii Gas is also working with other utilities, state agencies and departments and other stakeholders to pursue the use of large-scale natural gas in Hawaii by the 2018 - 2020 time-frame,” Boivin added.
