US set to transport its first LNG cargo through expanded Panama Canal

According to Reuters, the US is set to transport its first cargo of LNG through the newly expanded Panama Canal next week. The expanded canal officially opened in late June 2016, providing greater economies of scale to global commerce, and introducing new routes and liner services.
Reportedly, Shell’s Maran Gas Apollonia LNG tanker has loaded its cargo at the Sabine Pass export facility in Louisiana, US, and is scheduled to arrive at the waterway on 25 July 2016. Reuters claims that the destination of the vessel is not yet known.
A day after the vessel passes through the canal, BP Plc’s British Merchant will reportedly follow. It will be carrying a cargo from Trinidad and Tobago to Manzanillo, Mexico.
