LNG Industry,

Recently, it was announced that the Governor of Alaska, Bill Walker, will travel to Asia to promote Alaskan LNG. In advance of his trip, the Governor has reflected positively on Japanese interests in potential exports of the resource.

Walker, Lt. Governor Byron Mallott, Keith Meyer – the President of Alaska Gasline Development Corp. (AGDC) – and other key members of administration met with officials from Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corp. (JOGMEC) and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) to discuss the recent shift towards a state-led LNG project, as well as other resource opportunities in the state. Whilst METI is seeking to develop Japan’s economy and industry, JOGMEC is seeking to secure the stable supply of oil and gas, mineral resources and coal and geothermal energy.

Walker said: “Alaska’s relationship with Japan is a special one.

“This meeting further underscored not only Japanese interest in Alaska natural gas, but also the general optimism that exists across the Pacific for our state to enter the international market. Japan is the largest LNG-buying nation in the world, and their interest in Alaska is very encouraging.”

Meyer added: “In addition to the gasline and LNG project, we discussed JOGMEC and METI’s technological advancements in CO2 capture and sequestration, and the small scale distribution of LNG into remote markets, both of which could be very useful in Alaska’s overall development of the project.”

Andy Mack (Department of Natural Resources Commissioner), Randy Hoffbeck (Department of Revenue Commissioner) and Ed King (policy analyst) also took part in the discussion. Representatives from METI included Oil and Gas Division Director Yuki Sadamitsu, and Assistant Director Takayuki Kawamura. JOGMEC, meanwhile, was represented by Hajime Wakuda – the Business Strategy Department Director General – and Koji Hoshi – the Deputy Director of JOGMEC’s Washington office.
