Kanfer Shipping launches new small scale LNG solution

Kanfer Shipping has announced that it is to launch its small scale LNG shipping and floating terminal solution, which is based on the US Articulated Tug Barge (ATB).

One approach is one tug and one barge that work as an ordinary small scale LNG ship. The other is one tug and two barges where one barge can be used as a storage facility while the other barge is on its way to/from the LNG source.

Under Kanfer Shipping’s solution, a patented ATB design is made to operate in rough weather with LNG on board. The ATB has an approval in principle (AIP) and the solution has been brought to shipyards for pricing. Kanfer Shipping holds that the solution has a highly competitive CAPEX and OPEX compared to ordinary small scale LNG ships. With two barges, the solution will also become a floating storage/terminal solution.

Founder and Managing Partner of Kanfer Shipping, Stig Hagen, said: “There are more financial risk in investing in onshore terminal than floating terminals. Time to market and CAPEX are less than building onshore facilities. Together with a partnering ship owner we can own the solution and charter it out to clients.”

In a statement, Kanfer Shipping said that it has several letter of intents (LOIs) and working concrete projects on three continents. The company also confirmed that it has a North American investor from the maritime industry as a shareholder of Kanfer Shipping.
