Bureau Veritas has announced that it will class the unique ice-breaking Arctic LNG carriers for the Yamal LNG project in Russia.

Yamal LNG has awarded one vessel to Sovcomflot, three to Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), six to Teekay and five to Dynagas. All 15 of the vessels will be built at the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) shipyard in South Korea, and will be capable of carrying 172 000 m3 of LNG in four GTT NO 96 type membrane tanks and of operating in ice of up to 2.5 m thick. The ice-breaking vessels will be capable of navigating in light ice, or open bow first, as well navigating astern to cut through heavier ice. The astern method will be aided by a propulsion system that will be comprised of three pods, each delivering approximately 45 MW of power. Separated rooms for the engines will house the diesel power plants, and will be enclosed in a double hull in order to give protection from the heavy ice.

The Executive Vice President and head of Bureau Veritas’ Marine and Offshore Division, Philippe Donche-Gay, said: “We have made extensive investments in research into ice loads and navigation in ice, working with major Russian institutions and Asian shipyards. This effort, coupled with our world-leading expertise in large LNG carriers gives us a strong technical base to class these highly sophisticated vessels.”

The vessels will be built to Russian Register Arc7 standard for a year-round operation in second-year ice, with old ice inclusions with an ice thickness of 2.5 m. The hulls will be capable of operation in -45 degrees Celsius ambient temperature, and all equipment will be able to operate at -52 Celsius.
