Baltic ports to invest in LNG bunkering operations

In cooperation with Ports of Stockholm and Viking Line, three Finnish TEN-T core ports – Turku, Naantali and HaminaKotka – have agreed to invest a sum of €8 100 000 to go towards reducing the environmental impact of Baltic Sea shipping. Talks began in late October 2015, and aimed to improve the maritime links between Finland and Sweden.
As part of the project, plans have been made for the reception of scrubber sludge and LNG bunkering operations. In addition to this, preparations have been made for the construction of waste water reception facilities, which will allow ro-pax and ro-ro ferries to link to onshore power supplies.
Operating between Turku and Stockholm, Viking line aims to create an efficient and environmentally friendly ro-ro passenger ferry that will operate between Sweden and Finland.
Christian Ramberg, the CEO of Port of Turku, said: “By investing in environmental services, our ports create the possibility for our customers not only to comply with existing environmental regulations, but also to go beyond legislations. These are important measures to create a sustainable maritime link between Finland and Sweden.”
