The Spanish shipping company Baleària is in the process of constructing the world’s first high speed catamaran for passengers and cargo powered by dual LNG engines. The vessel is being built in the Armon de Gijón shipyard.
With a length of 125 m and a beam of 28 m, the new catamaran will have capacity for 1200 passengers and 500 passenger cars (or alternatively a compliment of trucks 500 m in length and 250 cars). According to Baleària President, Adolfo Utor, this makes it “the longest and highest-capacity high-speed ferry catamaran currently in existence.”
The vessel will be powered by four dual Wartsilä LNG/GO engines of 8800 kW each. This will allow it to reach a service speed of 35 knots and a maximum speed of more than 40 knots. In addition, it will have two tanks to store LNG, providing a range of 400 nautical miles.
Baleària will invest €90 million in the construction of the vessel, which is expected to enter into service in the summer of 2020.
