DNV GL has released a statement claiming that Shell, Roll-Royce and MAN have all signed up to its new LNG intelligence portal – LNGi. The portal aims to allow stakeholders in the LNG industry to share market intelligence and promote LNG as a marine fuel.

Gerd-Michael Würsig, Business Director LNG-fuelled Ships at DNV GL – Maritime, said: “The LNG industry has been growing rapidly over the past few years, so much so, that it has become increasingly challenging to keep track of all the latest developments.

“This is especially true for ship owners who are considering the option of using LNG in their vessels and want to ensure they have considered all the relevant factors.”

The portal features an interactive map, which provides information regarding global LNG bunkering operations, as well as data on both existing and planned infrastructure, such as LNG truck-loading facilities, tank-to-ship bunkering facilities, and LNG bunker vessels. It also provides information on the ports themselves.

Shell’s General Manager LNG Business Development, Lauran Wetemans, added: “LNGi keeps us in touch with new developments around port infrastructure and additions to the LNG world fleet. This information helps us anticipate the needs of our customers and identify new opportunities.”

Ole Skeltved, the Head of Marine Installation Department at MAN Diesel & Turbo, said: “Such a comprehensive overview would be difficult for any single company to obtain on its own. LNGi offers shared business intelligence on a much broader scale than previously available and helps give ship owners, who are new to the LNG industry, the confidence they need to move forward with their business plans in this field.”

The portal also provides information on alternative fuels and solutions for lowering emissions, such as the use of scrubbers. LNGi will be supported by the Society of Gas as Marine Fuel (SGMF), which will review the portal’s data and provide information surrounding LNG bunkering projects.

Mark Bell, the General Manager of SGMF, said: “It is important that we all refer to a trusted data set as the industry develops, LNGi offers just that. Benchmark information is critical in a complex and sometimes confusing market and this data set will play an important role, accelerating developments in this field.”

In the future, DNV GL claims that the portal will feature segment-specific studies, as well the ability for ship owners to show interest towards LNG suppliers for bunkering in particular locations. It will also provide improved AIS features and greater detail on infrastructure projects and particular LNG-fuelled vessels.
