MOL names new LNG carrier

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has announced that it has held a naming ceremony for its new LNG carrier, which was constructed for Osaka Gas Co. Ltd and Kyushu Power Co. Inc. The carrier was named LNG SATURN at the Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd.

The carrier is 288 m long, 48.94 m in breadth, has a draft of 11.55 m, and features a Moss-type non-spherical tank (continuous tank cover). Furthermore, it has a gross tonnage of 138 000 t, and has a cargo capacity of approximately 153 000 m³.

Largely, the carrier will transport LNG purchased by Osaka Gas and Kyushu Power from the INPEX-operated Ichthys LNG project in Australia. This is the first time that an LNG carrier that is entirely owned by a Japanese shipping company will serve both electric power and gas companies based in Japan.
