Winterthur Gas & Diesel (WinGD) has announced that, together with Doosan Engine Co., it has demonstrated the first low-speed, low-pressure Wärtsilä six-cylinder X62DF (W6X62DF) engine for a commercial application.
The engine will be used for the new generation of very large LNG carriers, and is currently being tested by Doosan before it is delivered. Two of the engines will be used to power the first of two 180 000 m3 LNG carriers being constructed by Samsung Heavy Industries Co. Ltd (SHI) in South Korea. The vessels are being constructed for SK Shipping Co. Ltd and Marubeni Corp., and are scheduled to operate on a long-term charter to Total.
At a seminar that followed the demonstration at Doosan’s works in Changwon, South Korea, WinGD explained that a ‘fuel-sharing’ feature will be available on X-DF engines later in 2016. This will enable vessel operators to have the flexibility to use both liquid and gaseous fuel simultaneously if economically feasible at a given time.
