Ferus Smit launches LNG-fuelled cement tanker

Ferus Smit has announced that it has successfully launched the LNG-fuelled cement tanker, M.V. Greenland.
Greenland was built for the JT Cement joint venture (JV), which is owned by Erik Thun AB and KG Jebsen Cement (KGJ). The ship will be the first LNG-fuelled dry cargo vessel in the world, incorporating a pressurised LNG tank inside of the hull.
In the statement, Ferus Smit claimed: “Using LNG as maritime fuel is by far the most environmental-friendly solution available today. While sailing on LNG, the vessel will meet the most stringent emission criteria, as well as new norms that might be in place in future.”
The vessel features fully automated cement loading and unloading technology, which is based on the concept of the fluidisation of cement through the use of compressed air. This will allow the cement to be pumped to shore facilities through an entirely closed, and dust free, piping system.
Ase Espeland – the partner of the CEO of KGJ cement, Petter Tronstad – christened the vessel.
