DEME orders LNG dual-fuel dredger

DEME has announced that it has ordered a new trailing suction hopper dredger – the Bonny River – which will feature a long suction pipe, a large transport capacity with limited depth, and an additional heavy duty rock draghead. The vessel will be capable of operating effectively in shallow water and hard soils, and will be constructed by Cosco at its shipyard in Guangdong, China.

The Bonny River will have a suction pipe with a built-in submersible pump, which will allow sand extraction from over 100 m deep. It will also have a second, shorter suction pipe, which will be used for dredging on harder seabeds, as well as a 75 t draghead. In addition to this, the vessel will have an optimised hull design and have a transport capacity of 24 000 t.

The Bonny River will minimise turbidity generated by process water, thus allow dredging in environmentally vulnerable areas. In addition to this, the vessel will be powered by dual-fuel engines, which will run on diesel and LNG. It will carry a ‘Green Passport’ and ‘Clean Design’ classification.
