SIGTTO launches Panama Canal guide

LNG Industry,

SIGTTO has announced the launch of its new ‘Guidance for LNG Carriers Transiting the Panama Canal’ publication.

SIGTTO and the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) have identified issues that may need to be addressed to permit the safe and efficient transit of LNG carriers through the Canal. This Guide is the result of consultations between these organisations and is intended to provide practical guidance on the ACP requirements for the transit of LNG carriers through the Panama Canal.

When completed, the Panama Canal (third set of locks) expansion project is expected to enable the majority of LNG carriers to transit the Canal. Historically, LNG carriers have been unable to transit the Panama Canal, mainly due to size restrictions.

SIGTTO believes that this is the first publication produced by any shipping organisation regarding the new locks at Panama and that it offers essential guidance for any owner, operator, charter or ship master wishing to take their LNG vessel through the new locks at Panama. Details of any modifications required to existing LNG vessels or vessels currently under construction are also highlighted in detail.
