Baleària to construct new dual-fuel ferry

Baleària has announced that it will construct a new economically friendly gas-fuelled ferry in the LaNaval shipyard in Spain. Denia will invest €175 million and there will be an option to construct a second ship in the coming months. Operations are expected to commence in 2019 in the Mediterranean.
The Managing Director of LaNaval, Jose Ignacio Irasuegui, said: “the signing of the contract, after months of working together, confirms our strategy of working closely with our customers from the earliest conceptual stages. It’s a milestone that consolidates LaNaval’s positioning in the passenger ship market and, in general, in the design and construction of ships with high technological content. We are convinced that this agreement will be the start of a long-term relationship between LaNaval and Baleària, one of Europe's largest shipping companies in the field of freight and passenger transport."
The vessel will be 232.2 m long and will be one of the first passenger ferries fuelled by LNG in the Mediterranean. Powered by three dual-fuel engines, the vessel will be capable of reaching 23 knots. It will also be able to carry 1600 passengers and 340 vehicles.
