Bechtel and Chart sign FLNG development agreement

Bechtel has signed a long-term agreement with Chart to design and build floating LNG (FLNG) vessels that will use Chart’s Integrated Pre-cooled Single Mixed Refrigerant (IPSMR) liquefaction technology.

The agreement also states that Bechtel will have the exclusive right to this technology, and that it will only purchase proprietary equipment, such as cold boxes and brazed aluminium heat exchangers, from Chart.

The IPSMR technology makes it possible to integrate additional cryogenic separation stages for both natural gas liquid recovery and nitrogen removal. Brazed aluminium heat exchangers are incorporated into Chart’s LNG liquefaction process for optimum operational efficiency and thermal performance.

Bechtel Hydrocarbon Technology Solutions Inc. – a subsidiary of Bechtel – will manage the IPSMR liquefaction technology agreement.

The General Manager of Bechtel’s Offshore business line, Joe Gebara, said: “Chart's liquefaction technology offers performance optimisation for mid scale LNG plants that complements Bechtel's FLNG offering for that scale of facility […] Our collaboration with Chart will enhance current FLNG engineering and construction models in the industry by offering efficiencies on single mixed refrigerant plants to our customers.”

The President of Chart’s Energy & Chemicals business unit, Mike Durkin, added: “Bechtel are world renowned for their EPC and project management expertise and their proud record for the successful execution of LNG projects. We are therefore naturally delighted with this further development in our business relationship and excited by the potential for FLNG utilising Chart’s IPSMR process in the delivery of natural gas as a clean-burning, safe and economic fuel alternative.”
