Japan Petroleum Exploration Co., Ltd. (JAPEX) has announced that Soma LNG terminal, located at the No. 4 wharf of Soma Port, Shinchi town, Fukushima prefecture commenced has commenced operations. The terminal will serve as one of the important base in Japan’s domestic natural gas supply network.

Soma LNG Terminal is the first large scale LNG terminal in Fukushima prefecture. It is composed of a ground-type LNG storage tank with a capacity of 230 000 kl (one of the largest in Japan), two berths for receiving large ocean-going ships and domestic vessels, LNG vapourisation equipment, and an LNG shipping facility.

The terminal will receive LNG from overseas and will supply LNG vapourised gas to Niigata-Sendai line via the Soma-Iwanuma Gas Pipeline which commenced its operation in November 2017 in advance of the terminal.

According to JAPEX leadership, the terminal will serve as a base for the company’s LNG satellite supply system for the wider Tohoku region.
