The LNG Motion project, which was initiated by Axègaz, will be awarded a €27.8 million grant from the Connecting Europe Facility for Transport (CEF-Transport) programme. The project plans to pave the way for the large scale implementation of LNG truck fuelling stations located across the TEN-T core network corridors. It includes a study that will analyse the commercial, operational, technical, regulatory and environmental aspects of LNG fuelling in truck transport, as well as the feasibility of using bio-LNG and a standardised LNG-fuelling payment system.

Specifically, Axègaz will carry out a real-life trial in which 42 LNG fuelling stations are constructed across Europe along the TEN-T corridors in France, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Romania, Hungary, Poland, Germany and the Netherlands. Furthermore, in order to gather data, 200 LNG-fuelled trucks will be deployed across the EU. Investments will be made in a further 400 trucks outside of the scope of this action. The results from the trial will help to pave the way for the large scale roll out of LNG fuelling across Europe after the project period.

The LNG Motion project grant makes up almost half of the €60 million budget set by CEF-T for the ‘New Technologies and Innovation’ priority. Senior consultant Hezelburcht, Wouter Schilpzand, said: “The requirements for CEF-T proposals are high, and the competition is fierce. Any CEF-T application requires 100% commitment, and a good deal of preparation. Applicants Axègaz, clean fuel supplier PitPoint, Mabanaft and GCA, proved up to this challenge, and I am happy to congratulate them with this initial triumph!”

The Business Development Manager, Axègaz, Edouard de Montmarin, added: “A large scale European network coverage combined with a big fleet of heavy goods vehicles will enable to convince the market of all the environmental, technical and economic benefits of LNG as a near-future massive fuel for massive transport.”

The funding decision must now receive formal approval from the Connecting Europe Facility Coordination Committee. The committee will meet on 8 July 2016, and the adoption of the decision is expected to be made by the commission at the end of July 2016.
