Juan Carlos Varela, the President of Panama, has ceremoniously commenced the construction of the country’s first natural gas power plant. AES Colón has invested 1150 million balboas in the 381 MW facility.

The President said that the facility could present an opportunity for Panama to become an LNG distribution hub for the entire region.

He added: “I want to recognise, to the company AES, the growing presence and investments in our country. They show their confidence in the Government of Panama and the legal security of our country, as well as the wishes of their directors and investors to continue contributing to the progress and sustainable development of the Panamanian nation.”

The LNG will be located on Telfers Island, which is in the province of Colón. Combined cycle technology will also be utilised for the sake of efficiency and the environment. The facility will only need one-third of the water required by other plants.
