Hummel LNG hybrid barge enters second season of service in Hamburg

Becker Marine Systems has released a statement claiming that its Hummel LNG hybrid barge is entering its second season of service in Hamburg, Germany.
This year, the barge will also supply low-emission power to the AIDAsol cruise ship, which has already made three calls since mid-May. By October 2016, it will have made a total of 16 stops at the Hafencity terminal.
Barge operations have started up again at the beginning on the new cruise ship season. The Managing Director of Becker Marine Systems, Dirk Lehmann, said: “Due to some restrictions making the work more difficult, we are continuing to seek a mutual solution together with the relevant authorities.” This would allow the Hummel to supply power to cruise ships during port layovers, even after 2016.
Hybrid Port Energy – the operating company and subsidiary of Becker Marine Systems – will now be responsible for operations and product sales. This follows Becker Marine Systems’ work developing the barge. This also applies for the modular LNG PowerPac® special containers.
Lehmann said: “Discussions with the Port of Rotterdam for the implementation of another barge are already well underway.”
Becker Marine Systems claims that it is planning on offering LNG technology for other types of vessel in the future too, such as containerships, bulkers and tankers.
