Woodside wins AU$ 1.5 million from CFMEU
Woodside Petroleum has been awarded AU 1.5 million in compensation by a Federal Court over an illegal strike at its Pluto LNG site back in December 2009, which was actively encouraged by the Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU).
The Federal Court has ordered the CFMEU and its Assistant Secretary to pay Woodside Petroleum compensation for the strike, they have also been ordered never to take part in illegal strikes at any of Woodside’s sites, including it’s North West Shelf, Pluto or Browse projects.
In a dispute over accommodation at Karratha, over 1000 workers failed to turn up for work in December 2009. The workers were protesting at rules which required ‘fly-in, fly-out’ workers to vacate their accommodation at the end of every four week shift.
The CFMEU has been ordered to pay Au$ 1.5 million in compensation and also to pay AU$ 500, 000 in costs which Woodside may incur from contractors on site as well. The union also has to pay a AU$ 71,000 penalty to the company and Assistant Secretary Joe McDonald has to personally pay AU$ 14,000 to the company as well.
The union's Kevin Reynolds says the decision will not be contested.
"If we'd have lost the case we would have been paying out many millions of dollars more," he said.
Woodside has welcomed the court's decision.
