General Dynamics NASSCO – a subsidiary of General Dynamics – has announced that it has successfully delivered the world’s first LNG-fuelled containership, the Isla Bella. The vessel was delivered to TOTE Maritime nearly two months earlier than scheduled. This delivery was part of a two-vessel contract, which was signed with TOTE in 2012.

The two 764 ft Marlin Class containerships will be the world’s largest LNG-fuelled dry cargo ships, meaning that they will also be the most environmentally friendly cargo carriers in the world.

NASSCO claims that the construction and delivery of this vessel reflects the cooperation between regulatory bodies – such as the American Bureau of Shipping and the US Coast Guard – and industry, such as TOTE and NASSCO.

Kevin Graney, the Vice President and General Manager of NASSCO, said: “Successfully building and delivering the world's first LNG-powered containership here in the US for coastwise service demonstrates that commercial shipbuilders, and owners and operators, are leading the world in the introduction of cutting-edge, green technology in support of the Jones Act.”

The Jones Act approved vessels will operate in the area between San Juan, Puerto Rico and Jacksonville, Florida, US.
