EU supporting Lithuania gas pipeline
AB Amber Grid has signed an agreement regarding financial support for the construction of a gas transmission pipeline in Lithuania.
EU funding
The European Union’s (EU) Innovation Network Executive Agency (INEA) will provide financial support for the construction of the Klaipeda-Kuršenai gas transmission pipeline. The project will receive approximately €27.6 million under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) programme.
The project for the construction of the Klaipeda-Kuršenai pipeline (KKP) intends to create sufficient installed capacity to transport gas supplies from the LNG terminal in Klaipeda to both domestic customers and those located in other Baltic States.
Gas transmission system
Lithuania's current natural gas transmission system infrastructure is capable of meeting approximately 40% of the Klaipeda LNG terminal’s potential daily capacity. Following the construction of the KKP, the maximum capacity will expand, helping to meet more than 80% of natural gas demand in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
The KKP project is valued at approximately €63.7 million, and will include construction of 110 km of 800 mm diameter gas transmission pipeline from the connection point at the Klaipeda LNG terminal to the town of Kuršenai. Construction is scheduled for completion by the end of the year.
Comments
"The importance of the KKP project not only for Lithuania alone, but also for the entire Baltic States Region has been recognised also by the European Commission, which granted for the project financial support under the Connecting Europe Facility. The EU funding that has been received will significantly reduce the project impact on the transmission rates," explained Salius Bilys, CEO of Amber Grid.
