Polish LNG terminal 75% complete

LNG Industry,

Poland’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal is approximately 75% complete, according to a statement by the Chancellery of the Prime Minister of Poland.

Key facts

  • The LNG terminal will have a first-stage capacity of 5 billion m3 of natural gas per year.
  • The construction of the LNG terminal is of particular importance in the context of natural gas supply diversification.
  • Through the terminal, Poland will gain access to the global LNG market - it translates into more sources from which the country can import the commodity.
  • The investment is very important for Poland’s energy security and it is the first infrastructure project of its kind not only in Poland, but also in Central and Eastern Europe.

LNG tanks and pipelines

Recently, construction efforts have focused on LNG storage tanks, including the assembly and welding of internal tanks made of special nickel sheets, and the completion of the assembly of roof bridge steel structures for the installations on both tanks.

In offshore progress, the assembly of LNG pipelines is underway and pressure testing of steel pipelines has commenced.

Costs and funding

The LNG terminal construction will cost approximately PLN 3 billion while capital expenditure related to launching all the installations has been estimated at PLN 4.5 billion. The investment is funded from own equity, EU subsidies from the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment and from the European Energy Programme for Recovery as well as from loans acquired from the European Investment Bank, the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development and from commercial loans.
