Lloyd’s Register (LR) has presented STX with approval in principle (AiP) for a 50k dwt MR tanker design capable of using LNG as a fuel. This development is the result of close collaboration between the two companies.
STX incorporated an LNG-fuelled propulsion system into their existing conventional MR tanker design with technical assistance and support from LR, ensuring that the design is in compliance with the new IGF code as well as LR’s Gas Fuelled Rules, covering other applicable requirements. LR also supported STX in carrying out a risk assessment of the LNG-fuelled propulsion system for the vessel design.
EK Choi, Chief Technical Officer of STX, commented: “STX has an extensive reference list for designing and building MR tankers. The experience and know-how that has been built to date has been utilised to develop this new LNG-powered MR tanker. The design enables the lowest possible fuel consumption and allow owners to select a design that will meet the future SOx and NOx emission challenges.”
He added, “We are very happy to cooperate with one of the leading classification societies, LR, for the development of this design and to create a viable solution to meet the market demand for environmentally-friendly and technology-enabled products.”
Presenting the AiP, Young-Doo Kim, LR’s North Asia Technical Support Office Manager, said: “It’s been an exciting project where we are delighted to have been able to support STX in incorporating LNG as a fuel option.”
