New Fortress Energy to build US$200 million LNG terminal in Jamaica

The Jamaican government has announced that New Fortress Energy will invest more than US$200 million to build an LNG terminal in Jamaica. The facility will produce approximately 200 000 tpy of LNG, which will be initially offered to the domestic market before global markets. It will be both owned and operated by New Fortress.

New Fortress was chosen from a list of six other companies, which all submitted bids to supply the national energy grid with LNG, mainly through the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) Old Harbour 190 MW gas-fired power plant.

Vincent Lawrence, the Chairman of the Electricity Sector Enterprise Team (ESET), said: “New Fortress was not only the lowest evaluated price for the volumes required by JPS, it clearly demonstrated its commitment and capability to supply gas as scheduled by the detailed engineering studies they had undertaken.

“Integration of natural gas-powered generation is a model for countries around the world to seize control of their energy and environmental future. It will lead to stable, lower long-term power prices and the bridge to incorporating additional renewable power in the future. The work Jamaica has done this year, has created an immediate future where Jamaica’s energy sector will be unaffected by the daily price movements in the oil markets.”

In addition to this, there are plans underway to expand output for delivery to other Caribbean nations, which would make Jamaica a regional hub for the area.

Lawrence went on to say that the terminal is expected to be completed and ready for commissioning by 2017/2018.
