The Qatar Helium initiative is jointly organised by RasGas and the Ministry of Education and Higher Education. It is part of the ‘Energising Education’ initiative, a RasGas Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme that links energy industry expertise with the teaching of science.

Under the initiative, students from 36 high schools worked in teams to create projects that demonstrated their understanding of helium and its various industrial uses through scientific research, or media and social awareness projects. RasGas recorded a 40% increase in participating schools from last year.

The initiative was first introduced to the local high schools’ science curriculum in 2015. To date, nearly 6000 students have participated in the programme, using educational resources created by RasGas, including a book on helium and eight short films on its uses. The company’s engineers also delivered a workshop to teachers, sharing their expertise and insight on the subject.

Hamad Mubarak Al Muhannadi, Chief Executive Officer, RasGas, said: “For the second year, we are proud to see such vibrant student participation in the successful ‘Energising Education’ Qatar Helium initiative […] At RasGas, we believe that one of the most significant contributions we can make to the sustainability of our country is to encourage the younger generation to develop an interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), the subjects that drive innovation. We hope that such initiatives will inspire students’ interest in the field of science.”

Fawzia Abdulaziz Al-Khater, Director of Education Institute at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, added: “The Qatar Helium initiative is one of our collaborative goals towards raising awareness among our students on the importance of Qatar’s natural resources and how to preserve them […] We are pleased with our continued collaboration, which emphasises RasGas’ significant role in the energy industry.”
