LNG-fuelled ferry set to undergo sea trials

These trials are part of the operational training, and will be used to verify the interface with docks at the company’s terminals. Dock trials will be carried out at ports in the Southern Gulf Islands, Sunshine Coast, Departure Bay, Duke Point, Horseshoe Bay and Swartz Bay. As part of the company’s commissioning process for any new class of vessel, the ship will carry out trials at different locations for possible future deployment purposes, corporate planning and contingency scenarios.

Mark Collins, BC Ferries’ Vice President of Strategic Planning and Customer Engagement, said: “We’ve heard from many customers eager to see Salish Orca, so we wanted to let the public know when the vessel would be visiting the various terminals.

“Passengers will be able to have a sneak peak of the ship from shore over the next four weeks, and we look forward to welcoming the public on board when we host official open houses.”

The vessel will officially enter service in Spring 2017, serving along the Powell River – Comox route. It will replace the Queen of Burnaby, and will be joined by the Salish Eagle and Salish Raven, which will serve the Southern Gulf Islands, later in the year.
