LNG set to dominate

LNG Industry,

LNG is expected to dominate US natural gas exports by the early-2020s as it becomes one of the world’s leading producers.

The US started exporting shale gas in the form of LNG in February this year from Cheniere’s Sabine Pass liquefaction plant in Lousiana.

Four more LNG export facilities being developed along the US Gulf Coast are scheduled to be completed by 2020 making the US the world’s third largest LNG supplier with an export capacity of about 60 million t.

In its Annual Energy Outlook for 2017, the EIA examined 8 cases in making projections for energy markets this year extending those out to 2050.

Included in Energy Information Administration's Annual Energy Outlook 2017 are energy projections through 2040 under a reference case, a high oil price case, a high and low oil and gas resource and technology cases, high and low economic growth cases, and a case assuming that the Clean Power Plan (CPP) is not implemented.

Natural gas prices rise ‘modestly’ in the reference case from 2020 to 2030 as electric power consumption increases, and stay relatively flat after 2030 as technology improvements keep pace with rising demand.

In the reference case, that assumes current regulation and central views of economic forecasters, as well as some improvement in known technologies, LNG is projected to dominate US natural gas exports by the early-2020s.
