Bangladesh LNG power project receives in-principle approval

Reliance Power has released a statement claiming that it has been granted in-principle approval from the Government of Bangladesh for the first phase of its LNG-based power project. Reliance Power claims that this project will be the largest foreign, direct investment in Bangladesh, with the potential for a total investment of over US$1.3 billion.

The first phase of the 750 MW power plant will be set up at Meghnaghat, which is approximately 40 km southeast of Dhaka. It will also include a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) at Maheshkhali Island in the Cox’s Bazar district of Bangladesh. The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) will provide the land for the power plant.

The FSRU will provide the power project with regasified LNG. It will also provide additional regasified LNG to PetroBangla.

It is expected that the first phase of the project will be commissioned in 2018 – 2019 (24 months after construction commences).
