GE and DSIC receive AIP for LNG carrier design

GE Marine and Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co. (DSIC) have announced that they have received Approval in Principle (AIP) from Lloyd’s Register (LR) for a jointly developed gas turbine-powered LNG carrier design.
The carrier has a length of approximately 292 m and a breadth of 46.40 m. It has a total cargo capacity of approximately 178 400 m3. It offers low emissions and the flexibility to operate on either LNG or liquid fuel.
The carrier will feature a GE gas turbine-based COGES (Combined Gas Turbine, Electric and Steam) system, which will include a steam turbine generator-set, a heat recovery system, and a 25 MW gas turbine.
Brien Bolsinger, the Vice President, Marine Operations, GE Marine, Evendale, Ohio, said: “With the AIP in hand, customers can feel confident in procuring a COGES-powered LNG carrier through DSIC.
“Operational benefits of gas turbines to naval architects, owners and operators include high power in a compact package and design flexibility. The gas turbine is so lightweight – fully 80% lighter and 30% smaller than comparable slow-speed diesel applications – that it can be located anywhere on the ship.”
