Crowley christens new Jones Act product tanker

Crowley Maritime Corp. has announced that it will christen the first of four Jones Act product tankers at the Tampa Cruise Terminal in Florida, US.
The tanker, named Ohio, is part of Crowley’s vessel build programme, and is a 50 000 deadweight ton, 330 000 barrel capacity vessel. It is 600 ft long and is able to carry crude oil, as well as refined petroleum products.
Furthermore, it is the first to receive LNG-Ready Level 1 approval from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). This means that Crowley will have the option of converting the tanker to using LNG propulsion.
Over 100 guests have been invited to attend the christening. Pamela Beall, the President of a subsidiary of Marathon Petroleum Corp. – MPLX – will ceremoniously break a bottle of champagne across the hull.
Aker Philadelphia Shipyard Inc. (APSI), which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Aker Philadelphia Shipyard ASA, constructed the Ohio, whilst Jensen Maritime – a naval architecture and marine engineering subsidiary of Crowley – provided the construction management services. The final three tankers will also be constructed by APSI for Crowley, and have scheduled deliveries through 2016.
