Peter Coates, the Chairman of Santos, has announced two new appointments to the Santos board. Peter Hearl and Guy Cowan will both be appointed to the board as independent non-executive directors following the 2016 Annual General Meeting (AGM). In addition to this, Hearl and Cowan will also be appointed to the Audit and Risk Committee. Their appointments follow the retirement of both Ken Dean and Jane Hemstritch.

Hearl is currently a director of Telstra Corp. Ltd, where he serves as a member of both the Nominations Committee and the Remuneration Committee. In addition to this, he is also the director of Treasury Wine Estates Ltd, where he serves as a member of the Audit and Risk Committee. Hearl spent 18 years with Exxon, where he began his career with Esso Australia. After leaving Esso, Hearl held several senior positions in the food and drink industry.

Cowan, meanwhile, is a director of UGL Ltd. At UGL, he chairs the Health, Safety and Environment Committee and also serves as a member of the Audit and Risk Committee. In addition to this, he is the Chairman of Queensland Sugar Ltd and served as the Alternate Director of Woodside Petroleum Ltd from 1992 to 1995. Cowan has held various senior roles in the energy industry, including as the CFO and Commercial Director of Shell Nigeria (2000 – 2003) and as the CFO and Director of Shell Oil US (2003 – 2005).

Coates said: “On behalf of the Board and shareholders, I would like to thank Ken and Jane for their many years of outstanding service on the Santos board and its committees, including as chairs of the Audit and Risk Committee.”
