Santos GLNG has been recognised at the Queensland Premier’s Sustainability Awards.

It’s innovative 4.3 km under-sea tunnel, which connects its pipeline route on the mainland with Curtis Island, off Gladstone, has won the Innovation in Sustainable Technologies Award. The award recognises the completion of the tunnel without disturbing the local marine environment and with minimal impact to the surrounding coastal environments.

Santos GLNG Vice President Downstream Rod Duke congratulated Thiess, Saipem Australia and everyone involved, saying the safe delivery of the first under-sea crossing for Queensland’s CSG-to-LNG industry had delivered positive results for the industry: “It took more than 420 000 man-hours to complete the state-of-the-art tunnel and I commend the entire team for their outstanding work.

“This year is about delivering milestones across Santos GLNG, and we are particularly proud of the innovative way we built the marine crossing tunnel.

“Winning the Queensland Premier’s Innovation in Sustainable Technologies Award and being a runner-up for the overall Premier’s Sustainability Award is further proof of a job well done.

Duke added: “The completion of the pipeline tunnel demonstrates our ability to deliver world-class projects and is a great example of how we manage our environmental footprint.

“We’re leading the way in delivering a powerhouse industry for Queensland and we remain on track for first LNG in 2015.”
