Senator Landrieu urges Cameron LNG approval

The US Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., the chair of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, urged the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to approve Sempra’s Cameron Parish LNG Project (Cameron LNG) to export LNG in a letter to the FERC’s Chairman, Cheryl LaFleur.

Once FERC approval has been granted, the Cameron LNG construction project, which will involve the building of export facilities, can get underway.

In the letter, Senator Landrieu wrote: “I cannot overemphasise how important it is that FERC carryout its regulatory responsibilities regarding Cameron LNG in a timely manner. We must make certain that the regulatory process for approval of LNG facilities such as Cameron LNG does not disadvantage American exporters in the battle for the huge international LNG market. Also at stake are the over 3000 jobs that will be created by the Cameron project.” You can read the whole letter here.

Swift approval

In February, Senator Landrieu wrote to Ernest Moniz, Secretary of the Department of Energy (DOE), encouraging swift approval of Cameron LNG’s export license. The following day, after waiting for approval for more than two years, the Cameron LNG project received DOE approval. The Senator requested that siting approval be granted no later than mid-June 2014.

Earlier this week, Senator Landrieu held a hearing that discussed the potential of LNG exports to create thousands of high-paying jobs and support US allies overseas as well as creating energy security at home.
