Kosmos considering second Senegalese LNG plant

According to Reuters, Kosmos Energy has compiled appraisal offshore drilling results from Senegal that suggest consideration of a second LNG export plant in the country could be warranted.

Back in 2015, Kosmos discovered the Greater Tortue gas field offshore Senegal and Mauritania. The company partnered with BP to develop the field, utilising a floating LNG (FLNG) plant – the first production facility of its kind to be used in Senegal.

Tortue forms one part of a troika of gas accumulations that Kosmos is exploring and developing offshore Senegal. The Yakaar and Birallah regions are the other two.

The latest drilling results being reviewed by Kosmos are from the Yakaar region. It is reported that the results suggest the Yakaar-Teranga resource base is ‘world scale’ and has the potential to support an LNG project.

Kosmos hopes that all three regions in the troika offshore Senegal will eventually each be able to support a 30 million tpy LNG export terminal.

Kosmos and BP took a final investment decision (FID) on the Tortue FLNG project last year. The project is scheduled to begin production in 2022, with and initial capacity of 2.5 million tpy. This capacity will increase over time to 10 million tpy.
