Wärtsilä, Cryonorm to deliver LNG systems to European waterways
Wärtsilä and Cryonorm Systems BV announced plans to form a consortium to deliver LNG systems for the Inland Waterways (IWW) European market.
The partnership aims to create a standard LNG fuel system for inland waterway vessels that will achieve lower costs, while reducing the lead time for the system to conform with the short construction periods for these vessels.
Vessel targets
As part of a study undertaken by the two companies, numerous vessel types that operate on European waterways were analysed, and five vessel types have been identified as potential targets for an LNG fuel system. The study has also established standards for newbuild and retrofit installations.
The LNG system for this sector will be based on Wärtsilä's new LNGPac gas fuel supply system. The specialised version of the new LNGPac will facilitate the use of LNG fuel by reducing costs and maintenance requirements, while simplifying onboard installation.
LNG propulsion
The collaboration will see Wärtsilä and Cryonorm delivering a standardised and optimised LNGPac system capable of being integrated into an entire Wärtsilä LNG propulsion arrangement.
Commenting on the programme, Yves Bui, General Manager – Fuel Gas Handling, Wärtsilä Ship Power, said: "We envisage good potential for LNG as a fuel for inland waterway vessels because of its environmental sustainability and competitive pricing. By sharing the expertise of Cryonorm with the in-house knowledge and vast experience that we have gained in LNG fuelling systems, we expect to facilitate and accelerate the trend towards cleaner and more efficient inland waterway shipping.”
