Gas-fuelled vehicles on the rise

LNG Industry,

More and more fleets are acquiring gas-fuelled trucks as emissions regulations, the low cost of natural gas and rapidly evolving technology propels buyers into purchasing gas-fuelled vehicles. Vehicles unable to carry enough fuel in compressed form use liquefied natural gas (LNG) or liquefied methane.

According to a Zeus Development Corporation survey, in 2013, 41 orders were made for LNG-fuelled trucks and buses from 38 fleets. The largest came from Beijing Public Transit for 3100 LNG-fuelled buses. The largest US order came from parcel delivery service firm UPS, which ordered 700 units.

"LNG is growing in attraction to truck and bus fleets worldwide", Zeus Development Corporation LNG fuel analyst Siyu Chen said. "Orders were placed last year in Canada, China, France, Poland, Spain, the UK and the US."

The 41 orders catalogued include representation of both heavy duty tractors and buses. North America leads Asia in the number of combined orders by 18 – 15, although Asia dominates in terms of units ordered which stands at 4750.

The consistently low price of natural gas in North America has also encouraged dozens of marine fleets to consider using LNG to fuel their ships.
