Samsø ferry to run on LNG

LNG Industry,

Samsø Municipality has signed an agreement with Q8 Denmark A/S for the supply of LNG to the new Samsø ferry. The island ferry will be the first domestic ferry in Denmark operating on LNG. With zero particulate emissions and CO2 emissions reduced by up to 20%, LNG is the most eco-friendly fossil fuel available.

Q8's new status as a supplier of LNG is in line with its strategy of business development, which aims to develop and sell products that can meet market needs for mobility and reduced CO2 emissions.

Anders Hojer from Q8 said: "In addition to the environmental benefits, the application of LNG [renders] significant cost savings on fuel. Current price trends indicate that the price of gas is released from the oil price. The prices of gas is in decline as opposed to the price of oil.

"As fuel supplier, we need to deal with climate change and think long-term. This is fully in line with our CSR strategy and climate policy to develop and offer products that can reduce the transport sector's CO2 emissions, and this LNG project […] is an example of how it can be done in practice."

Widespread LNG usage

Today there are approximately 50 ships in Europe operating on LNG. It is expected that this figure will have increased 20 times over in five to six years. "Q8 wants to continue to provide fuel to meet the transport needs of the sector, while CO2 emissions are less. Alternative fuel LNG is probably part of the answer," Hojer continued. "Denmark has the market for LNG under construction, while the other Scandinavian countries adopt LNG on a large scale as an alternative to other types of fuel."

The Samsø ferry has space for 160 cars and 600 passengers. It has a dual-fuel engine, using both conventional diesel and LNG.
